Secret projects!

Well, my secret project has kept me from writing about what I've made... But I have given my sister her Christmas present, but forgot to get pictures! Way to go...

But, after cleaning out a portion of my mom's basement, I found what is likely the first project I've ever done! I probably made it when I was about 8 years old or so. Pretty exciting stuff!

So, cleaning out the basement I also found some cool yarns that my mom gave me. One of them is a white acrylic/mohair mix. I am making myself a shawl, using the stitch I made my sister's present in. And I feel like an absolute genius! I had an idea of how to make it work as a triangle stitch, and I did it! This may be one small step for those who are used to making their own patterns, but I was beginning to think I did not possess such power.

I have such horrible lighting, the picture looks black and white! This is after finishing one skein of yarn. The stitch is from my Complete Guide to Needlepoint book that tells you how to do absolutely everything! My next learning experiment will hopefully be building a quilt! I can't wait until I have a real job and can buy what I need to do such things--I don't think I even have a good pair of sharp, fabric-cutting scissors! I don't even know if they still make the good Ginger scissors, I assume they would. Anyways....

I also brought home some ugly yarn that I'm going to use to make those cool shopping bags--I want to change up the pattern a little bit. I don't think I am working in the right kind of yarn for it to really work out perfectly. And why crochet if you're stuck following the rules?

As always, more to come later on!

In Georgia

So, here I am in Georgia. Have not done too many crafts for awhile, but I have learned the ancient art of origami. I can make a peace crane! and a samuri helmet and a drinking cup, and who knows what else!

So I've basically been running around with Grace, currently hanging out the in the Bio computer lab... it smells like gas kinda--like scientifical gas.

Well, I'll post some pictures of my super cool origami when I get home and then I'll get to work making something new... There was a hat I made before I left for georgia, but it was too big, really cool, but needs reknit... so yeah.

studying???

Ok, so I tried to learn how to Hairpin Lace Crochet (I don't even know if I worded that right!). First of all, it's hard to find decent instructions/pictures simply because it is hard to explain in words. Eventually, I found a great video how to. She made it look really easy, but I don't really know if mine tured out quite right. As you can see, I made myself a loom for it... In general, the whole ordeal seems a bit too involved and complicated, especially since you have to make a bunch of these rows... I don't have any idea how on earth one would go about combining. Seems ridiculous!

In other news, I worked on a similar look with my knitting needles. It's about the easiest thing ever, I've just never done it... the good ole loop-de-loop that creates a big gap in the rows. It looks so pretty. This is the trial run, I was going to use some nice yarn and a pattern idea meant for hairpin lace crocheting. Hopefully my super secret project will turn out ok. I don't know if I can hold myself back from putting up pictures though. Not the greatest picture of the knitting experiment, but here it is.

Sigh. Addiction. I've gotta go IMDB Bob Newhart now for Mike... Big silly dilly.

Ta-Da!

Well, yesterday I set up a blog for my sister to start using... Tried to show it to her today and good ole blogger is not showing blogs today for some reason--mine or hers. She makes jewelry and will use her blog to show of her stuff I suppose. Are we a crafty bunch? heh.

In other news, I wrote a two page story in a couple of hours to turn in at my Russian Lit final. The test was unbelievably easy (even for someone who really didn't study!). Makes me wish I woulda written my story last night so that I coulda gone to work today. Oops!

As far as the crafting goes here, the sweater I started the other day, that looks groovy with it's perfect Erin colors is just not going to cut it. The stitch, however totally cool it is, looks a little bit too much like an afghan. Nothing wrong with afghans, I'm just not the kinda person who wears one. I might try to incorporate the stitch and colors into a super cool warm winter hat--it is winter and my head needs warming! Unfortunately, I just can't crochet while I have studying and writing to do. For some reason, once I start I just don't stop, and if I never stop, I'll never study! And I actually need to study for my film final--it's highly technical...well, for me it is.

A funny thought I had today... I could have a writing blog. Talk about online journal/blog addict. But, what can you do? It would benefit me to start writing random stuff. The only thing is it's hard for me to write when there's no deadline and there's other things like crocheting I can do!

Well, I suppose this should do for today!

Happy Monday!

Shirt...

Ok, so I've never made clothing except for hats (hats: easy projects that never last more than a couple of hours, if that... never really leave a hat unfinished).... Sweaters... Have started two knit sweaters... Didn't like them enough, stopped working on them and started to make more HATS!... After seeing all the MANY MANY MANY other crocheter's work online, I feel I should step up to the challenge and make a sweater allready.

Since I'm not a perfect knitter yet, I found a really cool looking crochet pattern from the 70's or so. The pattern is really big. The yarns I found are all different weights, and I don't know if they will work in the big picture. I also chose to make the medium size, but it seems like it might be a little too big... of course, I thought it would have more contour for a body, but so far, it's all straight, and well, my body isn't. I really want to learn how to do shaping with pattern stitches. It seems to be a concept always hovering over me and never hitting home... I'm pretty sure that once I figure that one out, I'll be invincible.

I took another picture, closer up, but it turned out all blurry. Another thing I will have to figure out. Well, another day. Today's goal: Write two short papers for finals, possibly study (with some dragging, kicking and screaming), and of course, work on my new sweater.

OH! real quick! The pattern I chose has no arms, well, sleeves. Will it be too hard to just add sleeves on? I'm worried it will end up looking dorky. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Switching Gears

Well, since I have banned myself from the xanga evil, I suppose I will just shift over to another evil. Woohoo.

So, I was going to have a Puzzle blog because, hey wouldn't that be fun? But, puzzle is put away for now and since it's cold again, I'm crocheting. The sweater I was knitting didn't quite turn out ok, but I was going to write about that stuff too. So, basically, I've decided to make this just Erin's Hobby Blog. Oddly, I think this idea sorta fits in with the other first idea I had for it when I made the account months ago. I'm just nifty like that I suppose.

Anyway, so far I've made two hats from a good pattern, two bags from a good pattern, and I'm going to make a spare pair of gloves next. The ones I made last year (made perfect for my short thumb!).

While I was crocheting at work, several of the teachers said they were going to hit me up sometime for a how to session. And then an idea... Next quarter I'm taking a media class (hopefully, I'm still waitlisted). What if I made a web accessable video how to? I dunno if it's a good idea, but it does keep building on me. We'll see. Hard to tell if I'll be back to some other hbby or not, although it will still be winter for much of next quarter and that increases the probability of still knitting/crocheting.

In other news, I got new shoes for 20 bucks at an outlet center. It was the first time I've ever gone to one of those, which is kinda odd since I've been going anywhere that has stuff for ultra cheap. On the other hand, I still thought everything was overpriced even on the clearance racks. What fun.

I'm so happy! this is an excellent way to start of Finals Week!! Let's Go Nerd Power!... :)
